I am going to ask you to do a little work right now. I want you to take this little riddle and see if you can find the answer. Please do not use a pencil, paper or calculator. I want you to do this in your head. It will then set the stage for what we are going to talk about today:
Again - this riddle must be done IN YOUR HEAD and NOT using paper and a pen.
Try it - You may be surprised at your answer...
Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000.
Now add 30. Another 1000.
Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10.
What is the total?
Please do the riddle in your mind before you go on or you will not likely understand what we are going to talk about in this newsletter article.

Surprised? I was. I thought it was a trick. I took the calculator and added it up. I still thought it was a trick and added it again. How does that happen? It is because of our MIND SET.
WHAT IS A MIND SET?
When we are set in our ways we develop a mind set. We do things the same way over and over and over. Often it causes us to jump to conclusions like this riddle did. It becomes the "SELF TALK" that we listen to every day. It is how we do things. Is it the best way? Not necessarily. Is it the right way? Not necessarily. We just do it that way.
Have you ever tried to get someone to change something they do after they have done it a certain way for years. It is like the old saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks". Be we are not old and we are not dogs.
Why is this important? Because some of the mind sets that we have can be very limiting in our life. For example are you over weight? Do you keep going on diets but you just can't stay thin. Are you having problems in your marriage but you just keep doing things the way you have always done them. You may be going to job you just hate, but every Monday morning you get up and go again. Did you know that you normally put the same sock on first every day (right or left). When you get angry, do you normally talk to your family and or friends in a certain way even when it causes them pain. We have a mind set. We are creatures of habit.
IF YOU KEEP DOING THINGS THE WAY YOU HAVE ALWAYS DONE THEM YOU WILL KEEP GETTING THE SAME THINGS YOU HAVE ALWAYS GOTTEN!
THE STORY OF THE HAM:
Most everyone has heard the story of the woman who cut the end off the ham every time she cooked it in the pan. Her daughter asked her one day why she did that. She said because her mother did it. So they went and asked her mother why she did it. The grandmother said she did it because her mother did it. The went and asked the great grandmother why she did it. She said it was because the pan she cooked ham in was too short for a normal size ham. Sometimes mind sets even get passed down from generation to generation. They are not necessary right, they are just the way we do it.
WHY CHANGE A MIND SET?
If your mind set is limiting you in your human potential then you need to change it. That is why I asked you to fill out those dream lists last week and learn to dream. Sometimes we get so set in our ruts of life that we just can not see out. We do not even know we are in a rut. We just keep on going down the path of life, assuming it will get better some day.
If you are doing a job that you do not love I suggest that you start thinking about getting out of your current mind set. If you are over weight and just can not stay thin, I suggest you start thinking about getting out of your current mind set. If you are not truly happy in your marriage then I would suggest that you start looking at how you are treating each other and change your mind set so you can find true happiness with each other again. If you are bored with your life then make a resolve to change. If you always negative and angry, then get out of your negative mind set and start changing and growing. Become all that you can be.
HOW CAN YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND SET?
We have talked in the past about visualization a lot. Visualization is a power that can disrupt your mind set and help you move on into a new and better life. By using visualization on a daily basis you can start to see yourself as being different. You can start to dream and hope to become. Sooner than you can imagine you will actually become what you have visualized each day. That is the trouble you see. Many of us have already done that in the past in a negative way.
LEFT BRAINED - RIGHT BRAINED
In order to change your mind set most effectively, you first must understand if you are left brained or right brained. If you do not know which you are, here is a web page that you can go to that will make that easy to find out.

So what? Well when you start to visualize, it is very important that you do it in a way that is most effective for you. If you are a left brained, math type person who learns best when things written down so you can read it, you will find yourself learning best when you hear it or read it. If you are left brained, you will want to write down what it is that you want to accomplish or make a tape recording of your goal so you can hear it. Then read it or listen to it, then close your eyes and visualize it.
If you are a right brained person who learns best when you can see a picture of it drawn out, you learn best by seeing a picture of what you want to learn. You will change faster if you will actually get a picture of what you want to do or become and look at it, then close your eyes and visualize yourself as already being that. Many people who are right brained even get a picture of some one who is already what they want to be (for example in weight loss), cut the head off and past a picture of their own head there to help them visualize.
Now apply visualization to changing your mind set. Both left and right brained people follow the same pattern of mind set. It is just that to change the mind set you will do best if you do it with sound or reading or with pictures depending on which you are.
CHANGING THE MIND SET
STEP ONE: Take what it is that you want to change and see if you can see how it is a part of your mind set pattern. Decide to change that mind set.
STEP TWO: Use your dream lists. Think about what you would like to be that you are not. Ask yourself why you are not that right now. You will find that it is mostly because of your mind set.
STEP THREE: Outline a plan for change. Do you want to be financially independent but find yourself broke. You are suffering from a broke mind set. If you are over weight then you have an over weight mind set. If you are cranky and negative and irritable with your family then you have a negative mind set. If you are unhappy with your job at work and hate Monday mornings, then you have a workers burn out mind set.
STEP FOUR: Use visualization to help you change your mind set. All these things mentioned above can be changed with visualization. You can be anything you want to be, if you want to be!!!!! Decide what it is that you want to do or be or become then get a picture or a written statement that shows you already being that. Now at least two times a day, take some time and just relax and listen to your recording, read your statement, or look at your picture. Then close your eyes and see yourself as already being what you are seeing or hearing in your mind.
TOO SIMPLE TO BE TRIED?
The sad thing about this technique is that it is so simple that some people are hesitant try it. They read about it and say, "Well, I just don't have time to change right now". "I just don't have the ambition to change right now". "It is too stressful to even think about right now". Have you heard yourself saying any of those things. Are you going to wait until after the holidays to start? This power of visualization works. It takes very little effort. But it does take DOING IT. This is a "WORKSHOP", remember?
I invite you to try it. I invite you to look at your mind set and see if you are stubbornly stuck in a rut that you do not like. If you are I invite you to COME OUT AND GET IN THE FAST LANE OF LIFE. It is really fun once you jump in and try it.
