Many years ago I heard George Romney, the Governor of Michigan say something that changed my life. I do not know if he was quoting someone else. He was a candidate for the President Of The United States when he made the speech. He said, "If not now, when? If not me, then who?" I have thought so much about that statement over the years. It dawned on me as I thought about it again and again, that I have just as much power to change the world as anyone else.
It is true that some other people may be smarter. Maybe some people may be more attractive or have more influence. Surely there are other people may have more talents. It is also a fact that no one is better than me at being me. And with that God given gift of being me, I can do what I can do, for who I can, with what I have, from where I am. That is all life asks of me to make this world a better place to live, to do my best. I am not in a race against anyone else. I am only in a race against myself. I can do my best and my best is good enough. That is the power to change the world for good, in the way that only I can change it.
I often find myself asking, "What difference have I made?" Because I talk about it so much, every Christmas, my wife encourages me to watch Jimmy Steward in the movie "It's A Wonderful Life". It has become a family tradition. She wants me to watch it once a year, just to re-remind me that we have influenced many people over the years. Sure our influence was just a little here and a little there. I am sure none of us will ever know in this life time the great influence that our "little here and little there" has had in changing the lifes of the people we have come in contact with. It only stands to reason that by having helped them, they in turn have gone on to help others, that they would not have helped if you had not changed their life with your influence. A little there and a little there is what mountains are made up of. Piles and piles of mole hills will eventually make a mountain.
As we start into this new year, I would re-remind you, that you can be a friend to those around you. You are unique. You have the power to influence others and do for others in a way that only you can do. So I ask you to not be "weary in well doing". Take courage and ever remember to:
