Ordinary People
Doing Extraordinary Things
Have you ever wondered why Tiger Woods is so good at golf? Did you ever wonder why Barbra Streisand is such a great singer? What caused Mohammed Ali to become such a great boxer? Was it because they set goals? Maybe, but I think it was more than that. I think there is another element there that causes people to reach for greatness. If you have ever known one of these people, you quickly realize that in most cases they are just ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Why are they so different then?
I have leaned from knowing a few of them that it is because they are on a mission. They have a purpose in life. All that they do is centered around fulfilling that mission or purpose. When you see the movie "Lorenzo's Oil" you catch a glimpse of a mother with a mission or purpose in life. Her mission was something that drove her. She almost could not fail because she would not quit. One of the options was not failure. Her whole life became centered around finding a cure for her son. If you knew Tiger Woods, you would know he is not playing golf to earn money. He loves the game. He loves competition. He loves beating the worlds best. He is on a mission. He has a purpose in life. That purpose or mission drives him. Do these people have goals. Sure. But it is not the goals that make them what they are. It is their mission or life's purpose. Goals just help them get there, once they see the place they want to go.
What is your life's purpose? Do you have a mission? When you die, what will be different or better in this world because of you? Have you ever asked yourself that question? Are you leaving foot prints in the sands of time, or are you just coping with life?
I gave another "It's Your Turn To Win Personal Achievement Workshop" this week. The need for us to have a mission in life or a life's purpose was driven home to me again so forcefully as I went through the principles in our workshop. It is not enough to just set goals. How can you set goals if you do not know what you want to be? How can you set goals to become something if you have no vision of it?
If you want to write foot prints in the sands of time, I believe that you have to have a mission in life. You have to have a life's purpose. You have to be engaged in doing something that you love almost as much as life it's self. When Monday morning comes around, if you have to struggle to get out of bed to start the week over again, you probably do not have a mission in life. You are just copping.
Here is a little stair step to life that I would like you to consider:
MASTERY
Learning and growing
Happy but wanting more
COPING with Life
We could of course put hundreds of steps in this little ladder, each step reflecting the state of life we are in. The point is, it is possible for every single one of us to get to the point in our life that every day we are experiencing MASTERY, not just coping. Not just putting in another day at the office or another day taking care of the kids. If we have a mission in life, if we have a life's purpose, we can be living a life of MASTERY every single day. We can be making a difference in our own lives and in the lives of those around us.When ever people ask me how I am, I try to say "Wonderful". Then I wait a second and watch their reaction. Almost with out exception, if they have not heard me say that before, they stop and look at me almost startled. Then I say, "It does not pay to be any other way". Again, almost with out exception they are startled at my response and start to giggle and say, "You are right" and walk away. It is not any harder to say, "Wonderful" than it is to say "Oh, I am doing OK". Are you just doing OK? Just OK? That is coping! When are you going to start feeling wonderful? When you go around telling everyone you are just OK how can you be more than just OK?
May I suggest to you that it is time for you to start thinking about having a mission in this life. It is time for you to sit down and think about what your life's purpose is. What are you going to do to leave a legacy to your grandchildren? How are you going to be happy if you are not happy? Feeling like you are making difference will bring you joy unspeakable. Coping will not!
So...... When are you going to start? The hardest part about getting started is getting started. You have heard me say that a hundred times.
You were born to be great. Everyone was. When you read about the lives of some of these great people around us, they were just little snot nosed kids just like us when they were small. They were not born great, they became great. They are mostly just ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS. You are just as capable of doing extraordinary things as any other person on this planet. The difference? They believe it. I hope you do too.
Now sit down and make out your lists. Find out who you are. Believe it. Then let me help you and lets make it happen. If you know who you are and what you can become, then you can set meaningful goals. You can become all that you can be. You can become who you were born to be. No more coping. Let's live a life of mastery every single day of our lives, starting today.
