EXCELLENCE - What is holding us back?
Your Two Minds
Your Two Minds
Most people are aware that we have a conscious and a sub-conscious mind. The things that we think about, see and do every day are in our conscious mind. The attitudes and behaviors we have are stored in our sub-conscious mind based on our experiences. The attitudes and behaviors we have are not based on truth but on experiences.
If we experience things that we think or believe are true than our sub-conscious takes it as truth. It is a well documented fact that what ever we tell ourselves with feeling, our sub-conscious mind takes as truth good or bad.
This is where our self image comes from. If people tell us we are ugly and we believe it, then we create a self image of being ugly even if we are not. We then feel ugly, and because we feel ugly we act ugly. It can be a vicious circle of untruth forming our self image.
The self image is made up of millions and millions of daily experiences, stored in our sub-conscious mind. As we live our daily lives, this sub-conscious mind becomes like a robot. I guides what we do by how we feel.
The sub-conscious mind is just like a thermostat to our behavior. When ever we are trying to achieve something we are limited by this self image. If we feel we can not do something or we are not good enough then as we try to achieve or accomplish what we have set out to do our sub-conscious mind will use our self image to keep us in line with our expectations.
It is not uncommon for people with low self esteem to quit or give up just before they reach success because they do not feel they can succeed. If they get too successful tension and stress will cause their performance to decrease. That is how our sub-conscious mind is like a self image thermostat that regulates our success mechanism.
Have you ever noticed that those who perceive themselves as winners always seem to succeed at everything they do. Those who perceive themselves as looses have a hard time succeeding at anything.
When we try to make any permanent change in our behavior by will power, it must first involve a change in our self image and then the change in our behavior will automatically follow. We are a slave to our sub-conscious mind which houses our self image. If you try to make a change at your conscious level by sheer will power, the change will only be temporary. When ever the conscious mind and the sub-conscious mind come into conflict over our level of performance, the sub-conscious mind will almost always win.
Our self talk is mostly what reinforces our self image. If you find your self going around all day saying that you can not do this or you always loose or everything always goes wrong in your life, you are right. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. We are what we think.
To change our behavior, we have to start reprogramming our sub-conscious mind. This can be done by repeating positive affirmations. Remember our sub-consious mind will believe anything we tell it with feeling.
Give it a try. Start saying things to yourself over and over like, "I am a winner", "I can do this", "I am the best".
We can change also our sub-conscious minds belief system by listening to positive motivational tapes and reading good books. We can change our belief system by picking mentors and studying their lives and trying to allow their positive attributes to show up on our screen of life by doing what they do. Our sub-conscious mind will believe anything we feed it with feeling, GOOD OR BAD.
We can change. We can learn to have a positive attitude and a high self esteem if we will to do so. We likely can not just change our behavior in one day by trying to do it through trying to over ride our current sub-conscious mind beliefs. Sheer will power is no match for millions of built up experiences over the years. We have to start "REPROGRAMMING". We have to change our self image with self talk.
It is a very well established fact that we have to first change our self image and begin to believe that we can do what we want to do, then, with sufficient time and repetition, the behavior of a winner will follow
WE CAN DO IT... WE CAN DO IT... WE CAN DO IT...
